Ilk1 interacts with the cytoplasmic domains of integrin ß1 and ß3 subunits as well as several adaptors and signalling proteins and acts as a proximal receptor kinase regulating integrin-mediated signal transduction. Ilk1 has been reported to regulate a number of biological properties including anchorage-independent cell cycle progression, tumour cell invasion and apoptosis. Over-expression of ilk1 has been documented in a wide variety of human malignancies.
