Initially isolated from porcine spinal cord it was named for its uterine contractile activity. In fasted rats neuromedin u expression in certain brain areas is lower than in fed rats. In animal studies with neuromedin-23 (rat) overnight food intake is significantly reduced indicating that neuromedin u may be a physiological regulator of food intake.
